This course encourages students to investigate the power of words. Language and literature help us connect to the world beyond the classroom walls and develop a deeper appreciation for other cultures and other ways of knowing; connect us to our history, both local and global; give us the tools to communicate with people around us; and help us develop a critical and creative approach to studying and  analyzing our world. Language is our vehicle for thought, creativity, reflection, learning, and self-expression!

"Once you allow yourself to identify with the people in a story, then you might begin to see yourself in that story even if on the surface it's far removed from your situation. This is what I try to tell my students: this is one great thing that literature can do - it can make us identify with situations and people far away."  ~Chinua Achebe
